Truck Camper Weight Calculator
A truck camper is cargo, not a trailer — it comes out of payload, and the brochure dry weight is never what you actually carry.
Weight sitting behind the rear axle acts on a lever, so it adds more to that axle than its own weight — while lifting load off the front. That is why a rig can be legal on GVWR and still over its rear GAWR.
Verify before you tow. These figures are a planning aid, not professional or engineering advice. Your real limits are the ones printed on your vehicle's door-jamb placard, your trailer's VIN plate, and your owner's manual - and those override anything calculated here. When numbers are close, weigh the rig and go with the more conservative answer.

OVER by 220 lb Over by 220 lb on a three-quarter-ton truck, with a camper whose brochure said 2,200 lb. The dry weight was never the number that mattered — 620 lb of water, propane, batteries and options were added before anyone got in.
Why the rear axle deserves its own check
Payload is a whole-vehicle figure, but a camper does not load the vehicle evenly. Its centre of mass sits behind the cab, and on longer campers a meaningful portion hangs behind the rear axle — which acts as a lever, adding more to the rear axle than its raw weight and lifting load off the front.
The practical result is that you can be legal on GVWR and simultaneously over your rear GAWR. Only a scale tells you. Weigh each axle separately and check both against the placard; the CAT scale guide covers the procedure, and it works the same way with a camper aboard.
Common questions
How do I know if a truck camper fits my truck?
Compare the camper's fully wet loaded weight against your truck's payload capacity from the yellow door-jamb placard — not against the tow rating, which is irrelevant here because nothing is being towed.
The camper is cargo. It sits entirely inside your payload allowance, along with you, your passengers and everything else you bring.
What is dry weight vs wet weight on a truck camper?
Dry weight is the camper as it left the factory: no water, no propane, no batteries, and usually no options. Wet weight adds the fluids and equipment you actually travel with.
The gap is large and consistently underestimated. Fresh water at 8.34 lb/gal, a full grey and black tank, two propane cylinders, two batteries and an air conditioner can add 800 lb or more to a brochure figure. Manufacturers quote dry weight because it is the smaller number.
Does a truck camper count against payload or towing capacity?
Payload, entirely. Nothing is being towed, so the tow rating simply does not apply.
This catches people out because trucks are marketed on tow ratings. A truck advertised to tow 13,000 lb might have only 1,800 lb of payload, which rules out most hard-side campers before you consider passengers.
Can airbags or upgraded springs increase my capacity?
No. They change how the truck sits and rides — often dramatically, and they are genuinely worth having for stability and headlight aim. They do not change GVWR, GAWR or payload, which are manufacturer system ratings.
A truck over its GVWR on airbags is still over its GVWR. The suspension was never the only limiting component; brakes, frame, wheels and tires were all rated together.
What about the rear axle rating?
Check it separately, because a camper loads the rear axle far more heavily than a general payload figure suggests. Most of the camper's mass sits behind the cab, and a portion overhangs behind the rear axle entirely — which levers additional weight onto it.
It is entirely possible to be under GVWR and over the rear GAWR at the same time. The only way to know is to weigh each axle.
