The formula

Capacity remaining = GVWR - current loaded weight

Water weight  = gallons x 8.34 lb
Projected     = current + water + propane
Margin left   = GVWR - projected

Legal, but 94% of GVWR with 426 lb of headroom. That disappears quickly once firewood, groceries and a full waste tank go aboard - waste water weighs the same 8.34 lb per gallon on the way home as fresh water did on the way out.

Common questions

What is GVWR?

Gross vehicle weight rating: federal regulation defines it as "the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle". For a trailer it is the maximum the trailer may weigh, fully loaded, including everything aboard and the tongue weight.

It is set by the manufacturer as a system rating covering the frame, axles, springs, tires and coupler together. It is not a number you can raise by upgrading one component.

How do I find my trailer GVWR?

The VIN plate or federal certification label, usually on the front left of the trailer frame near the coupler. It lists GVWR and each axle's GAWR.

If the label is missing or unreadable, the manufacturer can supply the ratings from the VIN. Do not estimate GVWR from axle ratings - the sum of the axle ratings is often higher than the GVWR, and GVWR is what governs.

Is being close to GVWR a problem?

Being under it is legal, but margin matters. Water is 8.34 lb per gallon, so filling a 40-gallon fresh tank adds over 330 lb; propane, batteries, tools and firewood add up faster than people expect.

A trailer that weighs in at 95% of GVWR at home is often over it by the second day of a trip. Leaving a few hundred pounds of margin is the practical answer.

What is the difference between GVWR and GAWR?

GVWR covers the whole vehicle. GAWR covers one axle system, defined as "the load-carrying capacity of a single axle system, as measured at the tire-ground interfaces".

Both apply simultaneously. You can be under GVWR and still be over one axle's GAWR if the cargo is loaded unevenly, which is exactly why weighing per axle is worth doing.
