Loaded fifth wheel 15,000 lb
Pin weight at 15% = 2,250 lb
Pin weight at 20% = 3,000 lb <- typical
Pin weight at 25% = 3,750 lb
Against a 3/4-ton truck with 3,200 lb payload:
Payload capacity 3,200 lb
Two passengers and gear -500 lb
Pin weight at 20% -3,000 lb

Remaining -300 lb OVER Over payload by 300 lb — on a three-quarter-ton truck, with only two people aboard, before counting the hitch hardware. This is the arithmetic that decides fifth wheel shopping, and it is why payload, not tow rating, is the number that matters.
Why fifth wheels use a higher percentage
A conventional trailer hitches behind the rear axle, so its tongue weight acts on a lever that lifts the front of the tow vehicle. More tongue weight makes that worse, which is why the range tops out at 15%.
A fifth wheel connects over the rear axle. The load presses down between the axles rather than levering behind them, so the truck carries it far more comfortably and the trailer is much more stable in yaw. That geometry is what allows — and requires — the higher 15-25% range.
Half-ton trucks and fifth wheels rarely work. A typical half-ton has 1,500-2,000 lb of payload. A modest 12,000 lb fifth wheel puts around 2,400 lb on the pin, which exceeds the entire payload before the driver sits down. Run the numbers with the payload calculator before shopping, not after.
Common questions
What should fifth wheel pin weight be?
Typically 15% to 25% of the fifth wheel's loaded weight, with most falling around 20%. That is substantially higher than the 10-15% used for conventional bumper-pull trailers, and the difference is structural rather than arbitrary.
A fifth wheel's load sits over the tow vehicle's rear axle rather than behind it, so the vehicle can carry more of it safely and the geometry is far more stable. That is why fifth wheels resist sway so much better than bumper pulls.
Does pin weight count against payload?
Yes, entirely — and on a fifth wheel it is a very large number. A 15,000 lb fifth wheel at 20% puts 3,000 lb directly into the truck bed.
This is why fifth wheels usually require a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck. It is rarely the tow rating that rules out a half-ton; it is that 3,000 lb of pin weight exceeds the truck's entire payload before anyone gets in.
How do I measure actual pin weight?
Same two-weighing method as a conventional trailer. Weigh the truck alone loaded as you travel, then weigh it again hitched to the loaded fifth wheel. The increase across the truck's axles is your pin weight.
Dry pin weight from the brochure is not a substitute. It excludes water, propane, batteries and every dealer-installed option, and pin weight rises as you load the front of the trailer.
What if my pin weight is too low?
Below about 15%, the trailer becomes unstable in the same way an under-weighted bumper pull does, and the truck's rear axle loses grip it needs for braking and steering control.
Unusually low pin weight on a fifth wheel usually means the load is stacked toward the rear. Move heavy items forward of the trailer axles rather than accepting it.
Is a gooseneck the same as a fifth wheel?
For weight purposes, effectively yes. Both put the load over the tow vehicle's rear axle through a bed-mounted connection, and both use the same 15-25% range.
They differ in hardware — a gooseneck uses a ball in the bed, a fifth wheel uses a plate-and-kingpin assembly — and goosenecks are more common on flatbed and livestock trailers while fifth wheels dominate RVs.
