How to Set a Trailer Brake Controller (Gain, Explained)
Gain is the one setting that matters, there is no universal correct value, and you can set it properly in about ten minutes in an empty parking lot.
What gain actually is
Electric trailer brakes are electromagnets. Current flows to the magnet, it grips the drum, and the shoes are forced against it. More current means more braking force. Gain sets how much current the controller sends for a given amount of braking.
That is the whole mechanism, and it explains why there is no universal setting. The right amount of current depends on how heavy the trailer is, how it is loaded, what condition the brake magnets and shoes are in, and how much grip the road has. A number that is correct for a loaded trailer on dry asphalt is too much for the same trailer empty in the rain.
Two things gain is not: it is not a reaction-speed setting, and it is not a ceiling. It is the trailer's share of the total braking effort.
Verify before you tow. These figures are a planning aid, not professional or engineering advice. Your real limits are the ones printed on your vehicle's door-jamb placard, your trailer's VIN plate, and your owner's manual - and those override anything calculated here. When numbers are close, weigh the rig and go with the more conservative answer.
The ten-minute procedure
Do this with the trailer loaded the way it will actually travel, somewhere with no traffic — an empty lot or a quiet straight road. Dry pavement.
1. Start low
Set gain to a low value — many controllers start around 4 on a 0–10 scale. You are going to work upward, because approaching from below means the trailer never brakes harder than you intended during the test.
2. Roll at about 25 mph
Get up to roughly 25 mph in a straight line.
3. Use the manual override only
Apply the controller's manual lever or slider — not the brake pedal. This is the key step, and the one most people skip. The manual override commands the trailer brakes alone, with the tow vehicle's brakes completely uninvolved, so you are feeling the trailer's behaviour in isolation rather than a blend of both.
4. Raise gain until the wheels just lock, then back off
Repeat the test, raising gain a little each time, until the trailer wheels lock briefly and chirp. Then reduce the setting slightly so they stop locking. That is your setting: the most braking the trailer can contribute without skidding.
Momentary lockup during this test on dry pavement at low speed is the intended signal, not damage. Locked wheels while actually driving are a different matter — a skidding trailer has no directional control, which is exactly what you have just tuned it away from.
How to tell it is wrong on the road

When to re-check
- The load changed materially. A trailer at 7,000 lb needs more gain than the same trailer empty.
- First tow of the season. Electric brake magnets and shoes wear, and a setting that was right last autumn is often light by spring.
- After brake work or new tires. Both change how much force the trailer can apply before locking.
- Wet or loose surfaces. Less available grip means less gain.
Brake performance and weight are the same problem viewed from different ends. If your rig is at or over its ratings, no gain setting compensates — check axle loads and tongue weight as well.

How do I know if the gain is too high or too low?
Too high: the trailer brakes grab before the tow vehicle does. You feel a jerk or a tug from behind, and in the wet the trailer wheels can lock and skid.
Too low: the trailer pushes the tow vehicle. Stops feel long, the front of the vehicle dives, and you are doing most of the braking with the tow vehicle alone — which overheats its brakes on long descents, exactly when you need them most.
Do I need to readjust gain for every trip?
Not every trip, but any time the load changes meaningfully. A trailer loaded to 7,000 lb needs more gain than the same trailer empty at 3,000 lb.
Also re-check after brake work, new trailer tires, or the first tow of the season. Electric trailer brakes lose bite as the magnets and shoes wear, so a setting that was right last autumn may be light by spring.
Does a brake controller work without trailer brakes?
No. A controller only sends current to brakes that exist. Many single-axle utility trailers have none at all.
Whether your trailer is required to have brakes depends on its weight and on state law, and thresholds vary considerably between states. Check the rule where you are registered and where you travel.
